After this week's brutal heatwave, take the weekend to cool off (either outside or inside) with an Open Streets festival, comedy shows, and parties for a good cause.

THURSDAY, JUNE 26

DC and the Poetry of AIDS
Attend a conversation about Essex Hemphill, Tim Dlugos, and Reinaldo Arenas – three local poets whose work and advocacy impacted the region before their lives were cut short by AIDS. The event is curated by Kim Roberts and Regie Cabico, and is part of HumanitiesDC’s wider “Culture Series.” (Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library; 7:00  - 8:30 p.m.; FREE)

We Deserve to Party
Before the week fully ends, head to a benefit concert to raise funds for Volare, a local organization that supports survivors of crime and co-runs D.C.’s Sexual Assault Crisis Response Program. Performers will include Veronique, Bonnie Ash & The Corner Crash, Saved By the Ick, and Brandin St. Clair. (Pie Shop; doors at 7:30 p.m.; $25+)

Art & Autocracy in the Americas
Catch the panel conversation about a new exhibit that explores the cultural response to autocracies. The show features works from artists including American sculptor Mimi Herbert, Cuban painters Jabriel Lafrance and Sandra Dooley, and Haitian voodoo flag maker Valentin Valris. (Amy Kaslow Gallery; 6:00 - 7:30 p.m.; FREE)

Moonlight Yoga
Unwind with a free yoga class in the fresh air. Attendees of all fitness levels and experiences are welcome, but remember to bring your own yoga mat (and water bottle!). (The Stacks; 7 p.m.; FREE)

FRIDAY, JUNE 27

Chamber of Comedy
Kick off the weekend by unwinding with some of the region’s best comics. This Adams Morgan Comedy Showcase will feature headliner Joey Friedman and include Arko Mazumder, Jenny Questell, Pierce Stevens, Will McCoy, and Micaiah Kimble-Glover. It will be hosted by Auriel Haack. (The DC Arts Center; 9:30 p.m. doors; $14.64+)

Cool Off in Public Pools
Outdoor public pools in the District are now operating on their summer schedules(instead of just on weekends), meaning that nearly every pool is open six days a week. Access is free for all District residents, with passes available for purchase for your out-of-town guests. Find your closest pool at the Department of Parks and Recreation website. (Locations and times vary; FREE for D.C. residents)

Open Streets Capitol Hill
For the first time ever, Open Streets is heading to Capitol Hill. This means that a mile of the neighborhood’s streets will be closed to vehicles and open for community members to walk, play, and celebrate. Expect hourly classes and performances, a foam party, and bike maintenance clinics. (Capitol Hill; 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.; FREE)

GoGo & Salsa
Get your groove back with a jam session that promises “Latin rhythm meets D.C.'s own backyard bounce.” Performances will include beats by DJ Harry Hotter, Bongo District, and the Chuck Brown Band. (Anthem Row; 4:00 - 7:30 p.m.; FREE)

It’s Only Drowning
Attend a book talk about facing your fears “at a time when it takes courage just to read the news,” through the authors’ experiences in surfing and friendship. Please note that this event has first-come, first-served seating. (Politics & Prose at 5015 Connecticut Avenue; 5 p.m.; FREE)

Uplifting Stories
Attend a storytelling showcase where comedians recount stories that will lift your spirits (even if the topics are untraditional). Comedians taking the stage will include Mahmoud Jaber, Alex Tyminski, Rola Z, DJ Gaston, Addison, Christian Balmer, Olivia Bailey, Bria Beddoe, and Leon Scott. (Busboys and Poets on 14th Street; 7 - 10 p.m.; $17.85+)
