500 new members by the new year
Keep our people-powered D.C. news going strong into 2027!
Two and a half years ago, The 51st was just an idea. Our vision was bold: What if we created a newsroom where the workers shaped its future, where the community we covered felt genuinely represented, and where we were beholden only to our readers, not wealthy shareholders or a billionaire owner? And you — our neighbors — stepped up.
Now we need your support again! To keep our work sustainably funded through 2027, will you help us reach 500 new members by December 31? All support is tax-deductible!
In our two years of existence we’ve gone from having zero full time employees to having seven, along with five dedicated part-time workers. We’ve contributed to a Pulitzer Prize winning series, we’ve translated our articles into Spanish and Amharic, and we published a voter guide that was read by over 50,000 people — that’s one-third the total number of voters in the recent historic primary.
Being predominantly reader-funded allows us to produce journalism that is sustainable, independent, and unafraid. Will you become a member so we can continue to report news that makes your lives better?
There are many ways to support The 51st, we’re a 501c3, so these are all tax-deductible:
- New annual and monthly memberships
- Upgrading an existing membership to a higher level (thank you!)
- One-time gifts on this page or through a Donor Advised Fund (DAF) EIN 99-3371005.
- As we continue to grow, we’re also looking for grant opportunities, foundations to support our work, and major donors to offer matches.
Workplace and institutional support
Supporting The 51st isn't just for individuals! We've heard from a few readers wondering if their workplace could buy a subscription for all employees (how fun!), or if their business could become a sponsor (how cool!).
We're finally able to say: YES!

We also accept workplace matching gifts for employee donations. All of these options contribute to this campaign! EIN 99-3371005.
It's no surprise that funding for local news has shifted drastically in the last decade, and we're committed to finding creative and values-aligned ways to grow and sustain our newsroom, by D.C. for D.C.
