Chevy Chase development drama

Plus, meet your new councilmember and peep the new Commanders stadium

Hey neighbors,

I’m anxiously refreshing the Capital Weather Gang’s homepage this morning in the hopes that I won’t have to find out what a “Snowzilla” is. It looks like I won't be so lucky: as of this morning, they’re predicting a storm will “wallop” the D.C. region this weekend — probably with at least 5 inches of snow, but it could be over 10. Sigh. Maybe the icy conditions will give us the gift it gave Minnesotans

The snow seems likely to stick around for days, so you better brush up on who is responsible for shoveling where (the answer is more confusing than you think), what to do if your apartment doesn’t have heat, and how to look out for your unhoused neighbors.

This week, we've got a writeup of a years-long fight over affordable housing in Chevy Chase, new details about the Commanders' stadium, updates from the Wilson Building including a new (interim) councilmember, an op-ed from local nurses who say their wages have been stolen, an introduction to our new Ward 7 community connectors, and plans for your weekend.

Plus, get your tickets now for our Black history edition of Ask A D.C. Native, Live!

What's the vibe in D.C. right now?

Family and friends who don't live here have asked our team this question recently ... you too? As the first anniversary of President Trump's inauguration passes, we're evaluating what's changed for D.C. residents over the past 12 months. Have you been directly impacted in some way? And even if you haven't, do you think D.C. feels any different? With all that in mind, how are you feeling about D.C.'s future? Contribute to our reporting by filling out this quick form.

Here's some news you may have missed this week:

  • Michael Rafidi takes the cake (the knafeh?), topping the 100 best restaurants in the D.C. region, again. Find out if your favorite place made the cut. [Washingtonian]
  • A National Guard member in D.C. dishes on the deployment, calling it “objectively unnecessary," "almost wicked,” and “ham-fisted.” [Washingtonian]
  • The Queer Eye press tour has been, uh, complicated. But the final season is still full of sweet D.C. moments – Black queer history, retro protest footage, and humidity-induced armpit sweat. [The Post]
  • Got questions about D.C.? Washington City Paper wants to answer them. [WCP]
  • A bus driver refused to stop at his final destination in D.C., yelling that he didn't get paid enough (honestly, probably true) while seemingly heading to Manassas instead, terrifying passengers. I followed the now viral Bluesky thread with bated breath. [People]
  • D.C.'s newest hospital, Southeast's Cedar Hill Regional Medical Center, is losing its CEO after less than a year. This follows other major leadership departures, including the chief operating officer and the chief nursing officer. [The Post]
  • You might be thinking about shoveling snow right now, but it's also time to get your kids signed up for summer camp. [City Cast]
  • A writer who grew up in the D.C.-area visited the National Museum of African American History and Culture for the first time, spurred by Trump's threats to change it. [Verite News]

Stay warm this weekend — and don't forget to pick up ice melt, check on your neighbors, and get cozy.

Take care,
Abigail
