Baby steps: Janeese Lewis George pledges universal affordable child care for D.C.
It’s not free, and her plan faces fiscal challenges.

Hey neighbors,
I’m anxiously refreshing the Capital Weather Gang’s homepage this morning in the hopes that I won’t have to find out what a “Snowzilla” is. It looks like I won't be so lucky: as of this morning, they’re predicting a storm will “wallop” the D.C. region this weekend — probably with at least 5 inches of snow, but it could be over 10. Sigh. Maybe the icy conditions will give us the gift it gave Minnesotans?
The snow seems likely to stick around for days, so you better brush up on who is responsible for shoveling where (the answer is more confusing than you think), what to do if your apartment doesn’t have heat, and how to look out for your unhoused neighbors.
This week, we've got a writeup of a years-long fight over affordable housing in Chevy Chase, new details about the Commanders' stadium, updates from the Wilson Building including a new (interim) councilmember, an op-ed from local nurses who say their wages have been stolen, an introduction to our new Ward 7 community connectors, and plans for your weekend.

Family and friends who don't live here have asked our team this question recently ... you too? As the first anniversary of President Trump's inauguration passes, we're evaluating what's changed for D.C. residents over the past 12 months. Have you been directly impacted in some way? And even if you haven't, do you think D.C. feels any different? With all that in mind, how are you feeling about D.C.'s future? Contribute to our reporting by filling out this quick form.
