Connecting with the community, one scoop at a time

Whoever came up with the old adage, “I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream!” was definitely onto something. Over the weekend, a group of 51st team members closed out summer with our Ward 7 neighbors at an ice cream social at the Benning Rd/Dorothy I. Height Library.

As a Community Connector, I’m always looking for ways to engage with residents in Ward 7, and an ice cream social felt like the perfect way to spark conversation and enjoy the last weekend of summer. With help from DC Public Library staff and our vendor, Everyday Sundae, we served nearly 150 cups and cones of cookies and cream ice cream and raspberry sorbet to residents of all ages.

Even more importantly, we talked with folks about what they love about their neighborhoods — and what they’d like to see change.

Neighbors spoke warmly about their communities — highlighting friendly neighbors, clean streets, green spaces, trails, and even happy hours at the dog park. Many called the Benning library a cornerstone and vital “third space” for residents.

Sticky notes with words and phrases like "neighbor," "parks," and "clean streets."
Some answers to the question: 'What do you love about your neighborhood'?

But folks also shared what’s missing. Jobs topped the list, with a call for more training for trade jobs for young people. Residents also wanted more youth programming and affordable rent and housing, and voiced concerns about ICE enforcement and the presence of the National Guard.

Some answers to the question: 'What's the first thing you would do if you were D.C. mayor?'

One thing everyone could agree on: ice cream on a hot day is a pretty perfect way to spend a Saturday afternoon.
