Every Thursday, we list some ways to get engaged in the city โ€“ whether thatโ€™s protesting, organizing with your neighbors, or testifying before your councilmembers. This isn't an exhaustive list; share your events and trainings with us using this form. For more ways to get connected, check out our resources roundup.

THURSDAY, JULY 10

Harriet's Wildest Dreams general info session
Looking to get involved in local D.C. organizations? Harriet's Wildest Dreams is the place to start. The Black-led abolitionist group will give attendees a snapshot of their work in D.C. โ€” from protecting Black, queer, and trans communities to fighting for D.C. statehood. The event will take place virtually from 7 - 8:30 p.m. You can register here.

FREE DC Congress Working Group call
Get up to speed on how bills moving through Congress could impact D.C., and learn about how FREE DC organizers are responding to federal interference in our city. It'll take place over Zoom from 8 - 9 p.m. You can register here.

FRIDAY, JULY 11

SNAP 101 training
D.C. Hunger Solutions will host another of its quarterly trainings on everything SNAP. Participants will learn the basics (income, households, expenses and deductions) and how to apply for the first time or recertify. There will also be a Q&A portion. It'll run over Zoom from 11 a.m. - 12 p.m. You can register here.

SATURDAY, JULY 12

TayDay: Community Violence Prevention Event
Several community advocates and local orgs are teaming up for a block party in River Terrace Park. From 12 - 7 p.m., there will be backpack giveaways, a moon bounce, games, free food, and music.

SUNDAY, JULY 13

Stand up for immigrants comedy night
Head to Room 808 DC for an evening of comedy with a cause; the show will donate proceeds to Ayuda, an organization that provides legal, social, and language services to low-income immigrants across the region. The show will run from 7 - 8:30 p.m. You can purchase tickets here.

MONDAY, JULY 14

Tax wealth, fund the District rally
DC Jobs with Justice, UNITE HERE Local 23, the Fair Budget Coalition, and a slew of other local organizations will be rallying outside the Wilson Building at 9 a.m. Monday morning, ahead of the D.C. Council's first budget vote.

TUESDAY JULY 15

Ward 8 Walk to the Polls
Oh right, there's an election going on! After you read our coverage of the race to fill Trayon White's former council seat, join the Washington Area Bicyclist Association and the Historic Anacostia Block Association for a community walk to a Ward 8 polling station. The group will meet at Sweet Tooth Cafe at 8 a.m. You can RSVP here.

From Trash to Treasure: Reconnecting with Urban Streams
Our urban waterways are full of more than just sewage! Join urban stream ecologist Rebecca Hale for a webinar about how freshwater ecosystems in cities connect residents to nature and each other. The Zoom is a part of the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center's 60th anniversary series. It'll take place at 7 p.m. Register here.
