15 things to do this weekend (because D.C. is still a beautiful, creative, fun place to live)

While a short-term D.C. resident attacks Home Rule, here are ways to celebrate the District like a real Washingtonian.

President Trump doesn’t own this city, and he doesn’t know this city. That being said, you should go where you feel safe. If you are out this weekend, consider refreshing yourself on how to defend your neighbors (or yourself) from ICE enforcement and what to know if you’re arrested

THURSDAY, AUGUST 14

Tomato party
It’s all in the name. Celebrate the summer fruit (vegetable?) through tomato-themed dishes, games, and even a farm tour. This event is free, but donations of school supplies (or for school supplies) are encouraged. (Common Good City Farm; 6 - 8 p.m.; FREE)

Novel Night Out: Monk and the Robot
If you’re looking for some escapist cozy sci-fi, this one-time book club is for you. The conversation will focus on Becky Chambers’ post-utopian world, and will be led by one of the store’s booksellers. (East City Bookshop; 7 p.m.; FREE)

Learn how to electrify your home
Get advice from a coach on making your home more sustainable. ElectrifyDC (with Go Electric DMV and the District’s Department of Energy and the Environment) is hosting a virtual group training to help you make the switch from gas appliances, get a heat pump, and find other ways to reduce energy consumption. (Virtual; 7 p.m.; FREE)

FRIDAY, AUGUST 15

Improv for All!
Yes, and you, too, can do improv. This low-pressure introductory class from the Washington Improv Theater is open to anyone who is curious about the performance art — no experience necessary. Just note that this event is 18+. (Project Create Arts Center; 7:30 - 9:30 p.m.; FREE)

Wicked screening
Bring your picnic blanket, pack some food, and catch a free showing of Wicked under the stars at the MLK Memorial. The event is part of a summer series that screens movies that “fought for what was right and whose lives inspire viewers to live the values of democracy, justice, hope, and love.” (Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial; 8 p.m.; FREE)

Pie Eating Contest
The Arlington County Fair wants to know: how fast can you eat a slice of pie – sans hands? Athletes (divided by age category) can use their mitts to hold the plate down on the table, but they are not allowed to use them to touch the pie or lift the plate. (Thomas Jefferson Community & Fitness Center; 1:30 p.m.; $10)

Opera in the park
Is this the Met or Dupont Circle? Listen to opera performed in four languages (Spanish, French, Italian, English) in the park. Four vocalists will present “soft pop opera,” meaning you’ll probably know at least some of the songs. (Dupont Circle Park; 3 - 6 p.m.; FREE)

Nerd Nite
Learn about codebreakers, cheese, and murder at this strange and entertaining lecture series. Expect expert speakers, rowdy nerds, and of course, slideshows. 21+ only. (DC9; 6 p.m. doors, 6:30 p.m. start; $10-20)

Salsa dancing
Find your rhythm with some outdoor salsa. The event starts with a lesson by Salsa with Silvia before open dancing, and it features live music by René Ibáñez & Cubano Groove. All levels welcome. (The Wharf; 7 p.m.; FREE)

Sounds of Africa concert
Surgarlane, led by UN Peace Ambassador and Grammy award-winning artist Chioma, takes center stage at this week’s Sounds of Africa concert. The show is standing room only, with accessible seating available upon request. (National Museum of African Art; 7 p.m.; FREE)

Spanish Sip and Speak
Looking for a place to practice your Spanish? Dr. Xiomara Rivera Pagán will be hosting a meet-up where you’ll also learn how to connect the language to Latino food and culture. Come just for the conversation, or choose a ticket that includes an empanada and a pisco sour slushie from Peruvian Brothers. (La Cosecha; 1 p.m.; $13-30)

Cocktail battle
Think you can make the best frozen cocktail in the District? Bring what you’ve got to Electric Cool-Aid’s 5th annual cocktail battle (entry form here). The winner will have their drink featured at Nationals Park — and even get a tiara. (Electric Cool-Aid; 2 p.m.; FREE)

Bring back your Beyoncé concert outfit for a rodeo-themed full band open mic. Go as an attendee or as a performer. Full food and drink menu will be available. (THRōW Social DC; 6:30 - 11:30 p.m.; FREE)
