Questions remain about MPD’s work with ICE. Activists want lawmakers to step in
They say the D.C. Council should publicly question MPD about cooperation on immigration enforcement.
Five days left and a long way to go. But I believe we can do this!
It’s the home stretch: this Friday is the last day of our campaign to grow The 51st by hiring Martin Austermuhle as our first full-time reporter and sustaining Executive Editor, Christina Sturdivant Sani’s role into a second year.
Right now, we’re 57% away from hitting our goal — to reach it we need to raise $14,000 a day. We know that’s a big feat, but let's assume all donors so far are free subscribers (they’re not), and if our other 6,600 free subscribers each donated 11 bucks — we’d close that gap!
We can do this if we come together to invest in the local news DC deserves. More than 696 readers have pitched in to help us build the future of local news in D.C. — one that’s rooted in community, led by workers, and driven by the stories that matter to the people who actually live here.
If you’ve been waiting to give, now is the time! All remaining donations towards our goal will be DOUBLED thanks to a generous $100,000 match from Viyas Sundaram.
Here’s just a smattering of the kind and inspiring things you've shared with us:

If you've already given (thank you!!!) or can't give right now (that's okay too!) but want to help out – spreading the word makes a BIG impact. You can write something from your heart, or if it’s easier – here’s a sample post:

Thank you for helping make these final days count!

With your help, we pursue stories that hold leaders to account, demystify opaque city and civic processes, and celebrate the idiosyncrasies that make us proud to call D.C. home. Put simply, our mission is to make it easier — and more fun — to live in the District. Our members help keep local news free and independent for all:
