Angry hour: Your weekly Civics Roundup
Plus, plenty of chances to plug into Free DC this week.

Every Thursday, we list some ways to get engaged in the city — whether that’s protesting, organizing with your neighbors, or testifying before your councilmembers. This isn't an exhaustive list; share your events and trainings with us using this form. For more ways to get connected, check out our resources roundup.
ONGOING
Film DC
As you've probably seen on your feed (and as Martin reported), D.C. residents are recording everything during this takeover. Migrant Solidarity Mutual Aid Network, Free DC, and Harriet's Wildest Dreams created a new hub where residents can submit information about sightings or interactions with police and ICE. Email photos, videos, and tips to report@filmthepolice.org. If you witness an ICE detention or raid, call the Migrant Solidarity Mutual Aid network at 202-335-1183.
THURSDAY, OCT. 2
Know your rights webinar
The Amica Center for Immigrant Rights (formerly the CAIR Coalition) is leading weekly seminars to teach residents how to advocate and protect themselves during interactions with federal law enforcement. Lawyers from local nonprofits will join to share their insights and answer questions. It'll be held on Zoom at 12 p.m. Register here.
SATURDAY, OCT. 4
Rise up for Gaza
The local Palestinian Youth Movement contingent and other activist groups are convening a march and rally on the Mall in solidarity with the people of Gaza, calling for an arms embargo and sanctions against Israel. Meet at New Jersey Avenue SE and Independence Avenue SE at 2 p.m.
Against fascism: What it is and how to fight back
How does fascism work, and what can we do to undermine it? This session from the Claudia Jones School for Political Education will explain how historic fascist movements amassed power, and how anti-fascist movements rose up to defeat them. It'll be held at 2 p.m. in Room 401-E of the MLK Jr. Library. Register here.
Know your rights training (another one!)
In partnership with Free DC, local gallery Art of Noize will be hosting a training on residents' rights when interacting with federal law enforcement. The training will be followed by a brief overview of the Free DC campaign. The meeting starts at 1 p.m. at 821 Upshur Street NW Rear, #2. Space is limited, so make sure to register here.
SUNDAY, OCT. 5
Evergreen organizing skills workshop
Join Sunrise DC for a workshop on navigating tough 1:1 conversation in organizing spaces, specifically focused on what works to bring someone over to your side. These workshops are held once a month-ish on Sundays, and you can also register today for November or December's planned event. The training will run on Zoom from 2 - 3:45 p.m. Register here.
Free DC Ward 6 campaign orientation and Ward 1 meeting
Hey, Ward 6 residents: Free DC is leading a campaign orientation particularly for you at Westminster Presbyterian Church. Head there at 1 p.m. to learn about how your neighbors are protecting D.C.'s autonomy under the takeover. (Residents of other wards are also welcome). Register here. Ward 1 residents who've already attended a Free DC orientation can attend the team meeting for October at All Souls Church at 1:30 p.m. RSVP here.
TUESDAY, OCT. 7
Free DC Ward 3 campaign orientation
This orientation is again open to all, but Ward 3 residents are encouraged to attend. Learn about Free DC's strategy and structure — and what part you can play in the movement — at the Cleveland Park Library. The meeting will run from 6 - 7:30 p.m. You can register here.
WEDNESDAY, OCT. 8
"Angry" hour for pissed-off optimists
Greater Good Studio is hosting an happy angry hour at Dacha Beer Garden in Shaw. Vent in community with like-minded residents and turn your frustration into some productive action. Your $20 ticket includes a donation to Peace for DC, a local org working to reduce gun violence in D.C., as well as reduced-price drinks and food. Hang from 6 - 9 p.m.
