Summer enters its final stretch this week. The transition from fiery, expressive Leo season to disciplined, practical Virgo season is all about balance. Closing Reception: DMV Artists for Venezuela

Earlier this summer, two devastating earthquakes that claimed thousands of lives in Venezuela, where an estimated 6.7 million families are still facing the lasting impacts. Instead of allowing the feeling of helplessness to take over, Venezuelan curator and former human rights lawyer Fabiola R. Delgado has organized an art auction fundraiser, with the help of local artists and arts organizers. You can collect original international works while simultaneously supporting crucial humanitarian relief.

Sensory-Friendly Night

In a world of loud sounds, flashing lights, and constant notifications, who hasn’t felt overstimulated? The free downtown museum of language offers a specific night for those with sensory sensitivities, where exhibit elements are modified and a sensory map leads the way through the self-guided interactive exhibits.

Amid an endless barrage of reality shows about finding true love, leave the Netflix login behind and go mingle! Hosted by failed relationship expert Rahmein Mostafavi — who claims to be an expert in failed relationships —  get out there to commiserate about our collective love lives.

Sapphic Dance Party

Celebrate women in music, queer and sapphic DJs, and the DMV’s dance music scene musicians at this reasonably-timed party. The vibe in D.C. has been doomy — but this all-women local DJ and drag queen lineup will help you let loose and move your body. In addition to supporting women creatives, a portion of each ticket will be donated to LGBTQ+ suicide prevention nonprofit The Trevor Project.

Come for the architectural wonder that is the Southwest Neighborhood Library, stay for the showing of the 2025 historical drama directed by Chloé Zhao. Based on the 2020 novel by Maggie O'Farrell, the film dramatizes the life of poet and playwright William Shakespeare and his wife Agnes Hathaway as they cope with the death of their 11-year-old son. We won’t tell if you work from the library on a Friday afternoon and treat yourself to a moody film.

Spend a Friday night wandering through the National Bonsai & Penjing Museum’s “Waiting To Be Discovered: A Viewing Stone Exhibit” — then, make your way down to the visitor center to refuel. On offer this week: Get a little spicy with Taco Dirty to Me, reportedly serving up “almost NSFW” flavors. After dinner, cool down from the heat with a sweet frozen treat from Frosty Softy. 

Poetry Kickoff with María Fernanda

The library and museum’s O.B. Hardison Poetry Series kicks off the season with D.C. native and internationally acclaimed Poet María Fernanda, immersing attendees in her captivating words at this intimate reading. In addition to showcasing her own poetry, María will read from poets who have influenced her life and work, including Nikki Giovanni & Robin Coste Lewis, alongside poems created earlier in the day by participants in the workshop she’ll lead.
