Local artists, global stage

Plus, best savory desserts in D.C.

Hey friends,

Last week, we shared our *very first* audience survey to learn how we can best serve you, our readers, as we enter our second year of publishing and expand our newsroom. We’ve already heard from almost 900 of you (!!!) and we’re excited to learn from what you’ve shared. We want to hear from as many readers as possible (our goal is 3,600 by Sept. 15), so if you’ve got five minutes to spare, help shape our newsroom by filling out the survey — and get the chance to win a $151 gift card!

Here is what we’re serving up for you this week: Not much of a sweets person? Neither am I, or Jill Nguyen, owner of Capitol Jill Baking — but that doesn’t mean desserts are off the table for us. For our series The 5+1, Nguyen recommends the five best desserts in D.C. for people who don’t like sweets, plus a bonus suggestion for a delicious appetizer. (Warning: Don’t read while hungry. Or do?)

For his first story with The 51st, senior reporter Elliot C. Williams went to the Phillips Collection to cover the new exhibit, “Tomorrow the Sun Will Rise.” From now until September 20, the contemporary art museum is showcasing 48 local artists whose work responds to the current political moment. (Do you have an art or culture story for Elliot? You can tell him here.)

Speaking of the times we’re in — this week marked a year since the National Guard began patrolling our streets. We asked readers to tell us what they will remember most about the federal occupation. Here’s what some of them had to say.

Need plans for the next week? We’ve got you covered. Check out our weekend events and civics guide to see where you can have fun and plug in. And if you want to plan further ahead, RSVP for our next edition of Ask A D.C. Native, Live! at MLK Library on August 24.

Happy Thursday!

— Sam

What are you seeing in D.C.'s creative scene?

Our senior reporter Elliot C. Williams has covered arts and culture in D.C. for the better part of the decade before he joined our newsroom, and he’s already hit the ground running.

But he’s still taking tips. What’s happening in D.C.’s arts and culture scene that’s exciting you right now? Who should Elliot get to know and where should he go to experience the best of the District? Let him know here
